The legend of Wierzynek

More than 650 years ago, in 1364, on the initiative of a Cracovian merchant, Mikołaj Wierzynek, the most famous feast in the history of Poland – the wedding of the granddaughter of King Casimir the Great to Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg – took place in one of the tenements in the Market Square. This magnificent ceremony was attended by the greats of the medieval world, including King Louis of Hungary, King Valdemar IV of Denmark and King Peter of Cyprus.

Legends say that ‘the tables were overflowing with food and drink’, and each guest was presented with gold and silver tableware. Even the most eminent chroniclers skilled in the art of description admitted that the artistry and abundance of the food, the hospitality and generosity of the host and the joy of the feasting guests were difficult to express. The tradition of celebrating food and royal service is still cultivated today, inviting guests to the magical thresholds of the Wierzynek Restaurant.

The elegance of taste in the heart of Krakow
